Being and Time

Reading this text by Martin Heidegger at the moment and will be putting some quotes on this site. I have been involved in counselling for several years and am expanding my services to offer existential therapy and reading Heidegger is suggested before beginning Jean-Paul Sartre’s “Being and Nothingness”, which I have purchased and will start next.

Moving back to New Zealand

I am starting this site, which I have owned for some time now, because we are considering a move back to Aotearoa – The Land of the Long White Cloud – New Zealand.

This site will be a venue where I can discuss my therapy interests relating to Cognitive Therapy, Rational-Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Wishing you good mental health!

Counselling Darwin

Our counselling services for Darwin are offered evenings and weekends, to meet the needs of those whose work week makes it difficult or impossible to attend counselling sessions between 9AM and 5PM. While our emphasis in Darwin is on offering counselling (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Person-Centred Therapy and Narrative Therapy) to those suffering from depression, anxiety and similar issues, we are also looking to expand our services in the near future to offer counselling in other areas.

Whether you are in Nightcliff, Coconut Grove, Fannie Bay, Alawa, Casuarina or another suburb, please contact us to see how we can help you.

Diet, Exercise, Depression and Anxiety

One of the topics that I would like to discuss on this website is the relationship between diet and exercise and mental issues, such as depression and anxiety. Topics for consideration could include the effects of stimulants like coffee on one’s moods and the effects of exercise on one’s overall physical and mental states.

I am not going to make this a long post, as I really need to go to the gym, myself!

Cheers,

Jerry

Why “Nocturnal Works”?

There are a couple of reasons why the name “Nocturnal Works” was chosen for this site.

One has to do with my own experience of depression. While depression is difficult to deal with at all hours, I found it doubly so during the night, after my child had gone to bed. Throughout the day, I was able to keep myself busy with tasks – some important and some menial – but at night, I was alone with my thoughts. I would lie in bed, yearning for sleep, but all I could do was ruminate on my pain. How I would have enjoyed having someone to talk to while all my friends and family and other support were sleeping!

The second reason builds on the first. There are many wonderful things about living in the most beautiful part of the world – the South Pacific – and an unexpected benefit is that it is daylight for us, while it is night time for our clients and friends in North America and Europe (to see the time in our capital, Wellington, click here). This has turned out to be a wonderful thing for our clients globally, as it means that we are awake and able to help when depression and anxiety strikes and all of your support network are asleep.

So, the name “Nocturnal Works” recognizes both the difficulties that some experience at night and our ability to provide our services when they are often most needed.

Depression and Anxiety Resources

This site is being developed as a place where those suffering from anxiety or depression – or those with loved ones suffering from these disorders – can come to find out more about what can be done to overcome these problems.

It is anticipated that this site will have a large variety of resources, including links to other therapeutic websites, an online workbook for depression and anxiety and many other materials to help you help yourself or those you love.
